Territory Truck & Forklift Training

Territory Truck and Forklift Training can help you get your truck or forklift licence. We offer individual training for the Medium and Heavy Vehicle Truck Licencing or small group training for the Forklift Licencing.

Our courses are tailored to suit your individuals needs. We aim to provide a safe and comfortable training environment with most of our training being completed in the one day.

ABOUT US

Errol is the Owner and Operations Manger of TTFT and has over 30 years experience in difference training fields.

He completed his cabinetmaking apprenticeship at the end of 1980 and worked in the building industry for the next 6 years, in 1986 he started work as a Prison officer in the Darwin Prison.

In the early 1990's he moved into the industries side of the Prison, teaching prisoners' skills in carpentry, cabinetmaking and general building.

In the late 1990's he obtained his structural welding certification and moved to the metal fabrication workshop in the low security section of the Prison.

The workshop was extremely productive, where they ran various welding courses over the next 10-15 years, including regular forklift courses as well.

In 2014 Errol left Darwin Prison and started work as a driving instructor with Palmerston Driving School. Over the next 6-7 years he has helped hundreds of people obtain their car licences. Mainly specializing manual licences.

In 2020, Errol upgraded his training credentials to include Heavy Vehicle Training and Assessing, joining his brother Glen Holmes at Territory Transport Training, he now helps people obtain their Medium and Heavy Rig Truck Licenses.

In 2025 he has again upgraded his qualifications to now also include Forklift Training, the Forklift Training is delivered and assessed through Eagle Training Services RTO # 70049.

Medium Rigid Licences

$990.00 inc GST

A Medium Rigid (MR class) vehicle licence authorises the holder to operate a medium rigid vehicle with two axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of up to 15,000 kg.

- Applicants must have held a Class C (Car) licence for a minimum of one year

Automatic Heavy Rigid Licences

$1,100.00 inc GST

An Automatic Heavy Rigid (HR class) vehicle licence permits the holder to drive a heavy rigid vehicle with three or more axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) exceeding 15,000 kg.

- To be eligible, applicants must have held a Class C (Car) licence for a minimum of two years (including any time on a provisional “P” licence), or have held a Medium Rigid (MR) licence for at least 12 months.

Synchromesh Manual Heavy Rigid Licences 

$1,320.00 inc GST

A Synchromesh Manual Heavy Rigid (HR class) vehicle licence permits the holder to operate a heavy rigid vehicle with three or more axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) exceeding 15,000 kg.

- Eligibility requires holding a Class C (Car) licence for a minimum of two years (including time on a provisional “P” licence), or holding a Medium Rigid (MR) licence for at least 12 months.

The LF Licence, or “Licence to Perform High-Risk Work – Forklift Truck,” permits operators to handle forklift trucks equipped with a mast and an elevating load carriage, complete with attached forks

Medium Rigid Licences

Holding a Medium Rigid (MR) Licence authorises you to operate the following vehicles:

Light Rigid (LR) vehicles – with 2 axles (front steer and rear drive) and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of up to, but not exceeding, 8,000 kg (8 tonnes).

Medium Rigid (MR) vehicles – with a GVM exceeding 8,000 kg (8 tonnes) and up to, but not exceeding, 15,000 kg (15 tonnes).

Trailers – the ability to tow a trailer with a GVM of up to 9,000 kg (9 tonnes).

Restriction:
Vehicles must not be articulated (i.e., no pivot or joint between the cab and trailer).

Licence Requirements (NT, Australia-Specific):
To apply for an Northern Territory HR licence, you must:

✅ Hold a Class C licence (car licence) for at least 12 months; or must hold an Australian license in any state/Territory

✅ Pass the Heavy Vehicle Theory Test (on road rules and heavy vehicle safety)

✅ Complete driver training with Territory Truck and Forklift Training

✅ Pass the practical driving test
Medium Rigid (MR) Licence Course Outline

Duration: 1 Day (Up to 3 hours in-truck training)

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a Medium Rigid vehicle, covering both practical and theoretical components.

Course Inclusions:

Pre-Operational Checks – Conducting systematic vehicle checks prior to operation.

Load Security – Correct use of load restraint methods including dog & chain and ratchet strapping tie-downs.

Visual Vehicle Inspections – Identifying and reporting vehicle defects.

Truck Controls – Understanding and operating all primary and secondary controls.

Safe & Defensive Driving – Strategies for minimising risks and promoting road safety.

Hazard Avoidance – Recognising and responding to potential hazards.

NT Road Rules Refresher – Review of key regulations relevant to heavy vehicle operation.

Practical Driving Assessment – Final competency assessment conducted on-road.


The theory test can be completed before or after you practical training and assessment. Once you have passed your practical assessment and theory test, you can get your licence upgraded at the Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR)

AUTOMATIC HEAVY RIGID COURSE OUTLINE
Duration: 1 Day

This course provides up to 4 hours of theory and comprehensive in-truck training, designed to prepare participants for safe and confident operation of Heavy Rigid (HR) automatic vehicles. Training includes:

Pre-Operational Checks – Ensuring the vehicle is roadworthy before use.

Load Security – Correct use of dog & chain and ratchet strap tie-downs.

Visual Vehicle Inspections – Identifying potential faults and safety issues.

Truck Controls – Mastering essential vehicle functions and handling.

Safe & Defensive Driving – Techniques for safe road use and risk minimisation.

Forklift Licences - Coming Soon

The LF Licence, or “Licence to Perform High-Risk Work – Forklift Truck,” permits operators to handle forklift trucks equipped with a mast and an elevating load carriage, complete with attached forks.

This course requires a person operating a forklift truck to plan the work, conduct routine checks on a forklift truck, shift loads in a safe manner, and safely shut down and secure equipment after completing operations.
